Town history

The earliest days of Montilla date back to Roman times. However, the succeeding Moorish occupancy did not also establish Montilla as a significant town.

Subsequently, Spanish inhabitation took place. In the year 1257, King Alfonso X bestowed feudal governorship upon a Portuguese noble, named Gonzalo Yáñez Dovinal, the settlement and stronghold of Aguilar whose region included the present day Montilla town. Following the consecutive changes in ownership of the town of Montilla, King Enrique II awarded the land, in the form of an entailed estate, to Cordoba Mayor Lope Gutiérrez. After roughly four years, he yielded the colony over to Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, the Great Captain, in exchange for lands in GuadalcázarMontilla became the focal point of the archaic colonies of Aguilar.

Throughout the centuries, several generations of leaders have taken control over Montilla. In the 18th century, Montilla turned out to be a progressively religious and cultural vicinity, evident with the erection of different extraordinary palaces, abbeys and places of worship.

At present, Montilla remains to be a quaint town yet clearly advancing, particularly with its wine and olive oil manufacturing industry.
